BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription drug that, when injected, temporarily paralyzes muscles. It contains a purified and safe form of botulinum toxin A, which is produced by the microbe that causes botulism. Manufactured by Allergan, Inc., it is used to treat permanent furrows and deep wrinkles in the skin that are formed by the continual contraction of facial muscles.

In addition to its cosmetic applications, it is used to treat a number of medical problems, including excessive sweating, overactive bladder, neck spasms, crossed eyes, chronic back, and jaw pain, and migraines.

Applications for BOTOX for Migraines

Although originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of eye and muscle spasms, BOTOX Cosmetic was quickly recognized for its cosmetic value. Properly placed injections of BOTOX Cosmetic block nerve impulses sent to muscles, weakening them to the point where they cannot contract, and temporarily eliminating moderately severe furrows and lines. BOTOX Cosmetic is used to treat the following:

  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Skin bands on the neck

According to Allergan, BOTOX Cosmetic has been “extensively researched, with approximately 2500 studies.”

What Are The Benefits Of Botox?

There are several reasons to appreciate Botox. Injections are virtually painless and take only a few minutes. The drug is FDA-approved and has been around for many years, allowing patients to see a long, clear track record of safety and effectiveness. Botox is versatile in how it can refresh the face, as well. In addition to using this product to reduce frown lines and other creases, we can administer Botox injections to lift a sagging brow line, reduce horizontal bands on the neck, and temporarily stop excessive sweating. There is no downtime and only mild side effects after treatment.

BOTOX Cosmetic Procedure

Dr. Magdy Nasra performs the procedure by using a very fine needle. The BOTOX Cosmetic is injected directly into facial muscles that are causing furrows and lines. Receiving the injections requires no anesthetic, but some doctors choose to numb the area to be injected with ice packs or topical anesthetic cream. Results can usually be seen within a few days of treatment, and typically last up to four months, although areas that are treated on a regular basis may retain results longer. Injections should be given only by qualified medical professionals.

How Long Does A Botox Treatment Session Take?

An appointment to get Botox injections may be completed within half an hour. This provides time for a brief consultation and evaluation of the skin and underlying muscle. Once you have decided that you want to have injections, the treatment can be performed immediately. Subsequent visits may take even less time because we’re already familiar with what you wish to achieve.

What Is The Difference Between Botox And Dermal Fillers?

Botox and dermal fillers work differently to address unique problems caused by the aging process. We use Botox to smooth lines that are caused by muscle movements, such as frown lines or crow’s feet at the outer edges of the eyes. This injectable cosmetic drug works by relaxing muscle movements, resulting in younger-looking skin. Dermal fillers are not used in muscle tissue, they are deposited in the soft tissue to increase the volume of the skin. Because they work differently, Botox and dermal fillers are complimentary.

How Many Botox Treatment Sessions Will I Need?

Only one Botox session is needed to achieve the desired outcome. Results will appear over 5 to 7 days and can last up to six months. Every person metabolizes Botox differently, so some people may need a touch up as soon as three months after their treatment. On average, patients tend to get touch-ups about every 4 months.

Are Botox Injections Painful?

No. Botox injections, like dermal filler injections, are administered with a very small needle. Patients do not need any anesthetic cream to tolerate brief treatment easily. Each injection may feel like a tiny pinch. There is no sensation from the product getting absorbed into the target muscles. Comfort returns as soon as injections are done.

Side Effects Of BOTOX Cosmetic

Injection-site side effects of BOTOX Cosmetic are usually mild and temporary, and include the following:

  • Pain
  • Infection
  • Inflammation
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Can I Wear Makeup After A Botox Treatment?

Yes. You may apply makeup right away after getting Botox injections. However, it is important to apply makeup carefully so as not to spread the product away from its intended target area. Diffusing Botox into surrounding tissues can lead to unpleasant results.
