What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a medical condition where your body can no longer effectively process certain foods and convert them into energy. Diabetes is typically caused when your body can’t manufacture or utilize insulin, the hormone that converts food into energy.

There are several types of diabetes, but the most common types are Type 1 and Type 2.

What Are The Symptoms Of Diabetes?

Not everyone who has diabetes experiences the same symptoms. However, you might consider testing if you experience one or more of the following conditions:

  • Excessive hunger or thirst
  • Frequent need to urinate, regardless of how much water you consume
  • Loss of feeling in your extremities
  • A greater number of infections than usual
  • Sores and other minor wounds that are very slow to heal

In some cases of diabetes, nausea and stomach pain can accompany the above conditions.

Who Is At Risk For Diabetes?

The risk factor for diabetes differs between each type. Risk factors for Type 1 diabetes are less clearly defined that Type 2 diabetes, but you might be at risk if:

  • You have certain autoimmune deficiencies
  • You have a family history of Type 1 diabetes
  • You live around specific environmental factors

Type 2 diabetes is far more common and accounts for nearly 95 percent of all diabetes cases. Risk factors for this type include:

  • Age
  • Family history of Type 2 diabetes
  • Medical issues that leave you intolerant to glucose
  • Lack of sufficient physical activity
  • Obesity
  • You’re an ethnicity more prone to diabetes (American Indians, Hispanic and Latino Americans, and African Americans)

How Is Diabetes Treated?

Dr. Nasra’s team provides you with a treatment plan based on the type of diabetes you have:

Type 1

If you have Type 1 diabetes, your care team places you on insulin medication. This helps your body convert food into energy. They might also prescribe dietary changes, insulin-monitoring routines, and physical exercise to control your blood sugar levels.

Type 2

Type 2 diabetes is manageable with a healthy diet and regular exercise. If your diabetes doesn’t respond well to this treatment, your care team may prescribe diabetes medications or insulin therapy.

No matter the type of diabetes you have, Dr. Nasra provides you with a blood sugar measuring device called the iPro®. This device evaluates your glucose levels and helps you and Dr. Nasra better adjust your dietary and lifestyle needs.
